In the Southwest Athletic Conference volleyball preseason coaches poll,
Jackson State headlines the teams picked to win the Eastern Division
Alabama A&M and Alabama State came in second and third respectively,
followed by Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State.
In the Western Division, Prairie View A&M was the coaches first place
choice to finish first, followed by Texas Southern with a total of 78
votes, Arkansas-Pine Bluff with 51, Southern received 47 votes and
Grambling State was picked to come in last with 32 votes.
The Hornets began their season at the UCF Tournament where they
won against UAPB and lost their next three matches against UNF,
Valporaiso and the University of Central Florida on August 30 - 31.
On the weekend of September 6 - 7 the Hornets buzzed their way to
the Spartan/Aggie Invitational where they lost to NC A&T, Murray State
A trip to North Carolina Central on September 8 resulted in a victory is
planned before the Hornets went to the ISTAP Collegiate Cup where
they won three matches against UNO, UAPB and Savannah State and
suffered one loss to Jacksonville State.
One last match is scheduled against Alabama on September 24 before
the Hornets Alcorn State for their first Southwest Athletic Conference
volleyball match on September 27.
Apart of the Eastern Division, Mississippi Valley beat Philander Smith
College in three and lost to Nicholls State and Tulane on August 30 and
lost again to Rider on August 31. .
On September 4 they beat Tougaloo College in three before losing to
Florida Atlantic and Charleston Southern on September 6.
On the next day they were swept by Jacksonville and North Florida.
They beat Rust College on September 9 before losing to Texas A&m
Corpus Christi in four, UT Arlington in three and UTSA on September 14.
On September 16, they lost to UAPB in three sets.
Matches are scheduled against Philander Smith College, Rust college and
Tougaloo College before their Southwest Athletic Conference volleyball
match against Alabama A&M on September 27.
The Jackson State Tigers, another Eastern Division team attended the
Southern Miss Tournament on August 30 - 31 where they were swept in
all three matches against Southern Miss, Troy ans Stephen F Austin.
On September 13 -14 the Tigers travelled to the Central Arkansas Sugar
Bear Classic where they lost to UT Pan American, Central Arkansas,
Arkansas-Pine Bluff before winning against Louisiana-Monroe.
On September 10 they lost to Lafayette before attending the Sam
Houston Tournament where they lost three matches against Washington
State, Sam Houston State and Lamar on September 13 - 14.
The Tigers lost in three against South Alabama in three sets against
South Alabama and are set to travel to the Georgia Southern
Tournament on September 20 - 21 to face Central Michigan, Charleston
The first Southwest Athletic Conference volleyball game is against
Southern on September 25.
Alabama A&M is another Eastern division team who started their season
with a 0-3 record by being swept by three major volleyball schools
whose teams are all currently ranked in the top 20 Western Kentucky,
Purdue and the Trojans of the University of Southern California at the
Purdue Tournament on August 30 - 31.
The Bulldogs lost three more at the University of Memphis Tournament
on September 6 - 7 against Memphis, Southeastern Louisiana and
On September 11 they lost in five sets against the University of
Alabama in Huntsville before heading to the Missouri State Tournament
On September 13 - 14 where they were swept by all four attending
teams from Oklahoma, Missouri State, Middle Tennessee and Tennessee
The College of Charleston Tournament is the last one of the preseason
and the Bulldogs are set to face College of Charleston, UNC Asheville
and Southern Methodist on September 20 - 21.
On September 24, in the T.M. Elmore Gym, the Bulldogs home
volleyball court, AAMU will face the University of Tennessee Martin
before they confront Mississippi Valley State on September 27 for the
first Southwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
The Braves of Alcorn State started the season with a home match
which they lost against Louisiana-Lafayette and a road trip to McNeese
State on September 4 which they lost in three as well.
On September 6-7 they lost all three matches at the Sawyer Camillo
Memorial Volleyball Classic against Houston, Louisiana-Lafayette and
They face Grambling State on September 10, Dillard on September 12
and Louisiana Lafayette on September 17, a match against Southern on
September 18 and a match against Arkansas Pine Bluff on September 24
before facing Alabama State in their first Southwest Athletic Conference
volleyball match on September 27.
Western division leader heading into the fourth week of preseason
competition Grambling State lost three matches on August 30 - 31 at
the University of Texas El Paso Tournament against Louisiana Tech,
Abilene Christian and UT Arlington..
On September 4, the Tigers registered their first victory against
conference opponents UAPB in a preseason match on their home court.
The Tigers lost to SMU two days in a row on September 6 - 7 then
faced Alcorn State who they beat in five sets.
On September 13 - 14 they travel to the TCU Tournament to face
Texas Christian before matching skills against Louisiana Tech on
On September 27, is the first Southwest Athletic Conference volleyball
match against Texas Southern at home.
Currently second in the Western Division SWAC standings the Tigers
hosted their own Texas Southern Invitational where they lost to Oral
Roberts then won two in a row against Southern and Prairie View A&M
on August 30-31.
The Tigers lost to the University of Houston in five on September 3
before travelling to the UTEP Tournament on September 6 - 7 where
they lost to Oral Roberts, Southern and UTEP.
The Tigers won a midweek match against Huston-Tillotson before
travelling to the Tulane Tournament where they lost to Tulane, North
Dakota and Florida A&M on September 13 - 14.
A match against UT Pan American is planned on September 23 before
the Tigers face Grambling State in their first Southwest Athletic
Conference volleyball game on September 27.
Third in the Western Division, UAPB Lady Lions lost four straight
matches to Alabama State, Valparaiso, North Florida and Central Florida
at the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Invitational on August 30 - 31.
They lost to Louisiana Tech and Grambling State in midweek matches on
On September 5 - 7 they lost to University of Central Arkansas,
University of Texas Pan American and University of Louisville before
beating Jackson State at the Central Arkansas Tournament.
They lost their match to Philander Smith College on September 9 and to
University of Arkansas-Monticello before losing three more to
Jacksonville State, Alabama State and New Orleans before winning over
Savannah State at the Alabama State Tournament on September 13 -
On September 16 they beat UAPB in three and are set to attend the
Southern Illinois Tournament on September 20-21 to face Georgia State,
Southern Illinois and DePaul.
One more match is scheduled against Alcorn State on their home
volleyball court, the H.O. Clemmons Arena the on September 24
before the first Southwest Athletic Conference volleyball match against
Texas Southern on October 4.
The Panthers beat Southern in a season opening match on August 30
before losing three more matches at the Texas Southern Tournament
against Oral Roberts, Texas Southern on August 31.
They lost another match to Houston Baptist on September 3.
At the North Texas Invitational the Panthers lost four matches to
Northwestern State, North Texas, Texas State and Utah.
They lost another midweek match to Houston Baptist on September 10.
At the McNeese/Fairfield Suites invitational PVAMU lost to Southern
Miss, Texas Pan-American, Louisiana Monroe and McNeese State before
getting their first victory against Huston Tillotson on September 16.
The Panthers are set to attend the Long Beach State Classic where
they will face Oregon, CSU Bakersfield and Long Beach State on
September 20 - 21.
Two more matches are scheduled first against McNeese State and then
against Huston Tillotson before the Panthers face Grambling State
Tigers on September 30 for their first SWAC volleyball match.
At the Texas Southern Tournament the Jags finished 0-3 losing matches
to Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern and Oral Roberts on August 30 -
At the UTEP Tournament they finished 1-2 with losses to UTEP and Oral
Roberts and a win against Texas Southern on September 6 - 7.
The Jags lost in three to McNeese State in a midweek match in their
Cliford Seymour Gym on September 11 before travelling to the Lion
Classic where they lost all four matches to Stetson, Louisiana Tech,
Southeastern and Nebraska-Omaha on September 13-14.
A match against Alcorn State on September 18 and another encounter
with Jackson State on September 25 precede the jags first Southwest
Athletic Conference volleyball match on October 2 against Prairie View
