Sometimes I like to use shagging as a team bonding exercise, where I count down from 10 and all the players have to work together by hustling quickly "to shag" or run and pick up balls in a cooperative manner, so they have to determine by talking loudly to each other

who goes to pick up the farthest balls,
who gets the closest,
who stays by the basket and pushes it closer to the players who go the furthest to pick balls on other courts...all before I count down to zero.

If I get to zero and all the balls aren't in..then I keep counting until they are. Then whatever number I end up on..is the number of sprints the team has to do together before getting a water break.

We do the Serve and Shag volleyball drill in every practice where I give players a predetermined area to serve to and once they complete their serve they jog and shag their ball to get set up on the opposite side of the court to repeat the drill from the other side.

Is a common phrase I say at least ten times each practice because its my way of telling my players 'the drill is over and its time to pick up all the balls and put them in the basket so we can move onto the next drill.

Another time I'll have players shag their ball is when we do a serving warmup drill.

Everyone is given a direction on where to serve and whether they need to serve deep or short in that direction. After they complete their serve, they need to jog and shag their ball. then set up on the other side of the court to serve again.

This time, in the same or a different direction that I've already informed them of.
