The Volleyball Setter Position; Setting the Three Set aka The 31

The volleyball setter runs the offense and her position is one of leadership and responsibility.

The setter leads their team's attack on their opponents, relays tactical information from the coach to her teammates and is the spark plug with the ability to see the big picture when it comes to directing her team's offense.

When a team is on serve receive, the setter is responsible for running the offense, which requires him or her to inform each of their possible hitters what set they are going to give them.

Volleyball Setting Drills: Seven Person Setting Drill

Here's what it looks like as a seven person setting drill.

During your practice warmups after you do the traditional setting back and forth, try combining a group of two players with a group of three players for some cross court setting reps.

In the group of three, after the setter sets, they shuffle step to join the group of two on their right.

The player on the far side doesn't move until they're told to or tagged by the person who just joined the group.

Working on:

* Proper technique while setting under pressure.

Everyone works together as a group of seven because everyone needs to work together to control their ball making sure it travels back and forth in a straight line while still performing the assigned two sets, in this case a two to yourself and a four to their partner.

Volleyball Setting Drills: Set A Two To Yourself And A Go To Your Partner

One player is on the ten foot line facing their partner on the end line.

They begin overhand setting the ball until I call out the  "set" they are to perform.

The first call is - a "4" set.

The "4" is the high ball set #setters set to the left front player. Both players set the "4" back and forth until I make the next call.

Things I'm looking for:

The "4" is a high ball 8 - 10 feet in the air that has a peak at the height of its flight - like an "A" which should happen midway between the two players.

This set, shaped like an "A", when done correctly should drop right on the head of the partner. .

Everyone including middles should set a "4".

Check my article “Volleyball Practice Drills For Setters and Non-Setters” for more variations of this drill.
