Let’s get started.

What Will You Learn?

1. How To Nail the Float Serve

Watch as Addi works on her jump float serve toss consistency while aiming for a deep line serve to Zone 5.

The float serve is like your secret weapon.

It's a technical serve that's not flashy, but it's

super effective because as it travels across the

net, it dips and floats and slides through the air

waves and then drops straight down into the

opposing team's court ideally once it passes

over the net.

When you get a handle on this type of serve, which is what my players do.... you'll make yourself into a consistent serving threat to the opposing team.

How Do You Do The Float Serve Correctly?

Body Positioning

  • Stand behind the service line with...
  • Feet shoulder-width apart in the shape of the letter 'L" with your front foot pointed where you plan to serve and your back foot perpendicular to the front foot.
  • I tell my clients to position their arms in the same way, in the shape of an "L" by holding the ball lightly in your tossing hand with arm extended in the direction of where you plan to serve the ball and
  • your serving arm extended above your head with the palm of your hand facing the wall on the right side of your body

The Toss

Consistency

Be consistent. A consistent toss is the secret weapon to curing many missed serves.

I've fixed many of my clients serving problems by focusing on teaching them

How You Contact The Ball Is Crucial In Order To Make the Ball Float - The Secret Sauce

When you give a friend a "high 5" you usually

No spin needed. Just a clean hit.

Serving in Volleyball Definition and Words For The Volleyball Service:

The Floater serve is a type of serve made by contacting the middle of the flat hand to the middle of the ball which once the ball crosses the net makes the ball float and dip making it harder for an opposing player to pass the ball.

Why It Works:

The float serve doesn't spin.

It has an unpredictable float, dip and dive in the air movement that is meant to confuse even the best passers who're usually capable of tracking the ball once it crosses the net.

Three Tips on Body Parts To Keep In Control So You Maintain Maximum Body Control When You Float Serve

  1. Keep your elbow high when you rotate your elbow when "high fiving" the ball just before contacting the ball
  2. At the beginning of your toss keep your tossing arm straight out in front of you and don't lower it below the level of your hip. Simple and consistent wins the day.
  3. Watch your hand when contacting the ball as if you're "high fiving" a bestie. A solid, flat hit is what you're going for.
